The Lounge(v) Framework and Retractable Members

Within the constrained NE51 apartheid house typology, the domestic lounge in Black South African households functioned like a second skin. It acted as a protective barrier against imposed 'unsettlability' and a living archive for cultural production.

A key physical object enabling this was the wall unit (colloquially referred to in South Africa as the ‘room divider’). It acted as a central storage and anchoring structure, making the ritual of lounging possible within severely constrained spaces. By storing belongings, it allowed occupants to transform a state of precarity into one of momentary settlement.

Lounging itself relied on a framework with distinct components. Among these were retractable members—portable artifacts and objects used for specific rituals, performances, and social gatherings. The room divider played a crucial role by housing these items, allowing them to be stored away when not in use. This rotational system enabled a single small room to host a variety of spatial programs, from rites of passage to event hosting, thereby supporting cultural continuity and worldbuilding within restrictive spatial conditions.
